Out of over 19,000 municipalities across the United States of America, only 20 are invited by the National Civic League to apply for the prestigious All-America City Award. Last June 2025, Tallahassee emerged as one of 10 finalists who took home the title.

The honor is nationally recognized to be one of the highest awards a community can receive and is bestowed upon those who demonstrate outstanding civic accomplishments, citizen collaboration, and innovative initiatives. This year marks a third victory for Florida’s capital city.

“I’m really proud of the community coming together to achieve this,” says Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey. “Tallahassee is a great place to live, work, and play, and I think our secret’s getting out!”

The focus of this year’s All-America City Award revolved around the theme of “strengthening environmental sustainability through inclusive community engagement,” something Dailey says Tallahassee has been fostering via its dedication to clean energy usage, the further development of its green spaces, and a citizen’s approach to community planning and redevelopment.

One key initiative that led to the city’s designation this year was its adoption in 2023 of its Clean Energy Plan, a foundation of 87 goals that will lead to the achievement of 100% net clean, renewable energy. Thus far, progress has been made in the form of the development of infrastructure for electric vehicles with over 500 home charging stations, improvements to grid resilience, and energy efficiency, leading to more economical electricity bills and the fact that 42% of the city’s fixed-route bus fleet is now electric.

Tallahassee also boasts one of the nation’s largest on-airport solar farms, which has led to the further implementation of renewable energy across thousands of households.

“We’re very proud of our sustainable efforts,” Dailey says. “We are one of the leaders in producing solar energy at our facility, and we like to think we’re leading the way.”

Dailey also lauded the efforts of the city’s parks and recreation team, as park system expansion has officially put Tallahassee past the 100 park mark at 102 and approximately 4,000 acres in green space, with more in the making.

Aac Day 3 6 29 25 137 Web

“I think we’re up to about 95% of having the entire municipal population living within a 10-minute walk of a park or a green space inside the city limits,” Dailey says.

The expansion has made possible increased participation in city athletics and community center programs, enhancements to infrastructure, public safety, and the beautification of underserved neighborhoods, which include the Southside.

And, on that note, Dailey says the Southside Action Plan, a comprehensive effort to directly address the needs of neighborhood infrastructure, planning, and housing, is an essential part of the application they submitted for the award. Through surveys, virtual meetings, and special events, Tallahassee addresses citizens’ needs directly, resulting in the addition of over 2,000 affordable housing units, more than $200 million invested in renewed infrastructure, increased public safety measures via new transit, and aesthetic improvements.

“It’s a prime example of what happens when we listen to our citizens and come together with a shared vision for Tallahassee,” he says.

Aac Day 3 6 29 25 486 Web

For the All-America Award presentation itself, Dailey and his team headed to Denver, where each finalist put on a presentation before a panel of civic leaders. These presentations have evolved over the years, Dailey says—it’s not a dry PowerPoint, and the serious stuff was in the writing submitted early on. He advised his team to concoct something that demonstrated Tallahassee knew how to have a good time.

The result was a Daily Show-type of skit in which Dailey and Tallahassee residents, officials, and community leaders hilariously conveyed the fruits of their labors as they were hosted by local radio personality Greg Tish.

They left quite the impression, and the fact that Tallahassee has received the designation for a third time is something Dailey doesn’t take for granted.

“I think it shows that Tallahassee has, over the decades, been on the right track, and we still are,” Dailey explains. “To be recognized for our excellence is a humbling experience. The citizens have worked really hard to get to where we are, and I’m just proud to be the mayor.”

Alluxsuites at 1876 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/alluxsuites-at-1876/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 11:59:58 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=24852

Business is conducted at the capital. While many of Tallahassee’s visitors are transient, staying for days or weeks at a time, high-quality hotels are limited, opening a gap for travelers seeking apartment-like comforts rather than a simple refuge while staying in the capital.

There is a growing market to accommodate travelers seeking short-term extended stays with more amenities than a hotel can offer that does not require a lease.

“This property is more than just a renovation; it’s a model for where we’re headed as a brand.”

That’s how Bob Brier, cofounder and principal of Edgewater Group LLC, describes the remodeling of the former TownePlace Suites in Tallahassee into the new boutique hotel, Alluxsuites at 1876.

According to Brier, the new hotel will set the tone for future developments across the region. Building a network of high-quality, design-forward extended stay properties is the goal. That includes a sister location in Americus, Georgia, where Alluxsuites at The Vault transformed a historic bank building into a full-service hotel.

Tpsccne 29 Web

While Alluxsuites at 1876 is new to Tallahassee as of February of this year, the Edgewater Group has roots in the city with an office park and other commercial properties.

“Tallahassee has been a key market for Edgewater for several years,” says Ketan Vora, another cofounder and principal of Edgewater. Vora is also a member of the Ascend Collection Advisory Council. “We’ve long recognized the city’s potential for thoughtful, experience-driven hospitality.”

Touting its dynamic university base, government presence, and growing business community, Vora says the Tallahassee market is primed for a new kind of extended-stay offering. The new hotel is the fifth Ascend Hotel Collection property, a brand known for its boutique-inspired stay and distinctive, high-quality properties.

The property is part of the Choice Hotels International and their Choice Privileges rewards program that includes more than 7,000 hotels around the world across 22 different brand hotels.

Located at 186 Capital Circle Northeast, the Tallahassee hotel has 93 rooms ranging from studio to two-bedroom units. The hotel has a fitness center and a laundry facility.

Alluxsuites at 1876 offers what they call “business-friendly amenities,” including a larger room for corporate events and small business meetings.

Each suite also comes business ready, with large workstations and stylish decor aimed toward both business and leisure travelers.

All rooms feature complete kitchens with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, oven, stove, and dishwasher. The hotel website lauds luxurious bedding with crisp linens, thick mattresses, custom comforters, and fluffy pillows.

The hotel celebrates Tallahassee’s legacy with three colleges and a rich history at Florida’s capital by incorporating artwork that reflects the vibrant heritage and culture. Pieces are featured in every room, offering what the hotel calls “a nostalgic journey through the city’s past and present.”

Tpsccne 56 Web

All of this comes with an upscale atmosphere at a competitive price and a promise of “comfort without compromise.”

While open for business, the hotel is still going through a multiphased renovation to update suites and the entire facility, which includes plans for a restaurant and an on-site bar. They hope to open the 1876 Bar & Grille by the summer of this year.

The hotel describes the new dining spot as a “relaxing dining experience” and “offering a diverse menu in a comfortable setting,” which will feature an outdoor dining patio and firepits for unwinding under the stars. The varied menu offers classic burgers, sandwiches, tacos, and salads. They also plan to serve premium dishes, including ribeye steaks, filet mignon, seafood, and pasta, as well as a breakfast menu.

The hotel is pet friendly for up to two pets per room at 50 pounds or less per pet. They do charge a $100 fee per pet, per stay. Parking and high-speed internet are free. The hotel is a smoke-free property.

“Alluxsuites at 1876 reflects our belief that today’s travelers—whether students, professionals, or families,” Vora says, “deserve style, flexibility, comfort, and modern-day conveniences without compromise.”

Sandestin Real Estate https://www.850businessmagazine.com/sandestin-real-estate/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 11:59:33 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=24896

Luxury in real estate isn’t necessarily defined by price point,” says Sara Becnel, president of Sandestin Investments and managing partner of The Agency Northwest Florida Beaches. “It’s about ensuring that anyone who entrusts us with their real estate needs feels truly cared for and catered to.”

This client-first philosophy motivated Becnel to rebrand Sandestin Real Estate as The Agency Northwest Florida Beaches in January, aligning the company with a globally recognized real estate firm known for its white-glove service and innovative marketing resources.

“For over a year, I’d been exploring ways to broaden our reach and visibility,” explains Becnel. Determined to find the right fit, she began focusing on franchise models, looking for a brand whose philosophy, values, and approach resonated with her vision. One name, The Agency, stood out from the rest.

With its global presence of over130 offices in 12 countries, Becnel feels The Agency is small enough to maintain its boutique feel and collaborative culture while facilitating networking across its many locations.

“I wasn’t interested in joining a massive legacy real estate brand,” Becnel emphasizes. “I wanted to preserve our small, service-driven culture while giving agents and clients access to broader markets and powerful resources.”

For Becnel, the timing of her search was ideal as The Agency was actively seeking a partner along Florida’s Emerald Coast. The new partnership secured exclusive territory stretching from Perdido Key to Inlet Beach, offering sellers greater exposure and helping buyers discover properties they might otherwise have missed. Listings now reach high-demand domestic and international feeder markets.

This connection has already delivered results. One early success was receiving a $22 million referral for a Seagrove property from a connection with The Agency’s Aspen office.

Sarabecnel3 Web

The momentum didn’t stop there. Shortly after the Northwest Florida launch, The Agency approached Becnel about expanding into Madrid. The company had been seeking a partner to help launch the location, and with Becnel’s leadership and business skills, they felt she was the ideal choice. After conducting her due diligence, including market research and financial projections, and meeting with the local team, Becnel decided to commit to the new office.

According to Becnel, Spain’s real estate market is booming, with Madrid being a key European market. The Agency already operates in Mallorca, Málaga, and Barcelona. “Expanding to Madrid made sense,” she says. “We are committed to opening in Madrid on June 3, 2025.”

Today, the team operates out of the Sandestin Welcome Center in Miramar Beach, with plans for a new satellite location on Highway 30A. Becnel recently appointed Glen Stegemann as broker and executive director to oversee operations in Northwest Florida, Madrid, and future markets.

“He’s like a real estate encyclopedia,” she laughs. “He brings energy, fresh ideas, and great support to our existing team.”

At its core, Becnel emphasizes that the company remains family-owned and values-driven, powered by the same trusted team that people know and love, but with a new name and a wider reach. This high-touch approach extends beyond sales to rental support. While The Agency does not directly handle short-term rentals, it recommends Sandestin Rental Management for vacation rentals within the resort and beyond.

According to Becnel, another distinction is that The Agency Northwest Florida Beaches offers employee and 1099 agent models, which attract top-tier talent and offer agents flexibility and a personalized structure that works best for them.

Looking beyond the merger and Madrid, The Agency plans to actively explore other markets, both regionally and internationally.

“This isn’t just about growth for growth’s sake,” Becnel emphasizes. “It is about thoughtful expansion.”

Newsweek and Statista highlighted 700 hospitals across the United States to help consumers find trusted medical facilities. This year, the rankings were compiled using quality metrics from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the American Hospital Association Annual Survey of Hospitals Database, a nationwide online survey among medical professionals, results from Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers Systems patient experience surveys and a voluntary Patient-Reported Outcome Measures implementation survey.
