“We are so excited to welcome residents to our brand new community,” said Melissa Adams, executive director of Watersound Fountains. “For many residents, this marks the next phase of retirement, where they can relax and rediscover their passions — or find new ones. Our proximity to Watersound Origins also means mom and dad can be close to family while maintaining their independence and living a meaningful and fulfilling life.”

Watersound Fountains is located near the Watersound Origins community, less than a mile east of the famed Scenic Highway 30A. Amenities include a swimming pool, a fitness studio, a salon and spa, a wellness center, an indoor golf simulator and an outdoor putting green. “With Watermark, there is always something new to discover,” Adams said. “On any given day, residents can attend a painting class or wine tasting or take a trip to the beach with their neighbors. Our programs and events are also tailored to their unique interests, which creates an environment where each individual can thrive.”

In addition to the full calendar of community events, Watersound Fountains offers residents a 24-hour concierge to assist with reservations to local restaurants, theaters, galleries and concerts. Costa Family McDonald’s Opens First McDonald’s in Santa Rosa Beach https://www.850businessmagazine.com/costa-family-mcdonalds-opens-first-mcdonalds-in-santa-rosa-beach/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 23:53:15 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=22766

Costa Family McDonald’s opened the first McDonald’s in Santa Rosa Beach on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

Located at 2010 US Highway 98, the new restaurant, adjacent to Publix in Santa Rosa Beach, was built by Stansell Properties & Development. It spans 4,000 square feet and features a large parking area, drive-thru and plenty of dine-in space for patrons to enjoy. For the first time in the market, this location also features kiosks where customers will have the option to pay cash for their orders. The newest Costa location has created over 60 jobs for the community.

“For years, we have been looking for the right locations in Santa Rosa Beach, and we are so excited to finally be able to bring a McDonald’s to South Walton,” shared owner/operator David Costa, Jr.

The day started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. with the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce, followed by check presentations. The Costa Family donated $500 each to South Walton High School, South Walton Fire District and Walton County Sheriff’s Office. David Costa announced that he would double each donation, totaling $1,000 to each entity.

The restaurant officially opened to the public at 10 a.m., and the first 50 customers at the Santa Rosa Beach McDonald’s received free Big Macs or Happy Meals for a year, limited to Costa Family McDonald’s only.

“Opening the restaurant with 61 employees has been a true dream to watch our new team come together as we welcome residents and guests alike into our new restaurant,” said Costa.

This is the first of two Santa Rosa Beach locations Costa plans to open in 2024, with the second location coming in across from the Walmart in west Santa Rosa Beach. With the two new locations, Costa plans to give back to the local community, schools and charities surrounding each restaurant in Walton County. Local artist, Lindsay Tobias, is currently painting a mural that will span 14’ x 8’ and capture the nostalgia and family bond that McDonald’s inspires.

Since the company was founded in 1994, the Costa family has made it a pillar of their company framework to give back to the community and support in various ways.

IHMC’S $40M New Biomedically-Based Research Complex https://www.850businessmagazine.com/ihmcs-new-biomedically-based-research-complex/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 22:14:44 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=22411

The new $40 million biomedically-based research complex constructed by the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) will be more than a striking addition to the Pensacola skyline.

It will accelerate the pace of discovery that will drive innovations in maximizing the health span for everyone, from elite military operators and veterans to those with neurodegenerative diseases, musculoskeletal problems, and chronic metabolic conditions.

The Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance Research Complex is another step in the evolution of the vision that has been the bedrock of IHMC since its founding by Dr. Ken Ford, the Institute’s chief executive officer.

“Pushing the boundaries of science to maximize the performance and resilience of human beings has long been a foundational tenet at IHMC,” Ford said. “In our health span, resilience and performance research thrust, the vision has always been to work from the molecular level to the whole human. This facility brings that to life.”

Dr. Morley Stone, chief strategic partnership officer, noted that the leading-edge research complex allows IHMC’s interdisciplinary team of researchers to truly realize that vision.

“The healthcare system as it is set up now puts people on a trajectory to decline over decades,” Stone said. “We want to lead the science that drives people to extend the period of a person’s life over which they are high functioning and healthy.”

The unique facility puts Pensacola and Northwest Florida at the center of a human and biological sciences economic ecosystem that did not exist before this $40 million research facility was built. It also serves as a draw for top research talent to the area from all over the world.

“The ability to move from whole human physiology and performance to the molecular level in one facility — there’s nothing else like it in the southeast that I can think of,” Stone said.

“The Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance Research Complex will be an economic and intellectual beacon for the entire Northwest Florida region,” Dr. Marcas Bamman said, the

senior research scientist and director of Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance Research at IHMC.

20240611 Ihmc Complex Ribboncutting 19

The science conducted here will be an economic engine, drawing in new funding for federal and industry-sponsored research. Partners in the project have included Space Florida and Triumph Gulf Coast, the nonprofit corporation funded by a legal settlement with British Petroleum following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Funding provided by these agencies helped seed and support the complex.

The Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance Research Complex stands apart among biomedical science hubs due to the collaborative, cross-discipline spirit that has been a hallmark of IHMC since its beginning. Researchers working in the new research complex are an arm’s length away from experts in AI, cognitive psychology, computational modeling, data visualization, exoskeletons, engineering and more.

“It’s an accelerant for the speed of discovery,” Stone said.

The three-story, 40,000-square-foot facility was built by Brasfield & Gorrie and designed by DAG Architects partnered with Atlanta-headquartered Cooper Carry. The complex is designed to fuel the pace of discovery. The first floor is built around human participant testing and intervention, featuring rehabilitation facilities, biomedical sampling tools and performance testing laboratories.

“The first floor focuses on clinical and applied science,” Bamman said. “The third floor contains leading-edge wet laboratories for cellular and molecular science, which enable us to extend and better understand the effects we are having on people on the first floor. We now have the unique capacity—leveraging a range of scientists and technology—to deeply study and improve strategies that enhance the health span, resilience and performance for all.”

“As the biological sciences have become intertwined with information and computer sciences, IHMC is uniquely positioned to accelerate that trend and excel while doing it,” Stone said.

“Every institution doing this work is struggling with how to generate meaning from that information,” Stone said. “Going back to our legacy, being able to tap into artificial intelligence and machine learning capability that was the foundation of IHMC is an invaluable resource for being able to make meaning out of that information that’s generated.”

20240611 Ihmc Complex Ribboncutting 54

A regional economic hub, a draw of international experts

The new Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance Research Complex is not just a magnet for talent. It is a magnet for dollars that come into the community that do more than recirculate around the community.

“In this case, we’re bringing in millions of dollars of new research money into the economy that our researchers use to buy houses, eat at restaurants and buy cars. That type of impact is hard to match,” Stone said.

While the population at large will ultimately benefit from what IHMC researchers learn about aging, degenerative and chronic metabolic conditions and what interventions might help ameliorate these, military operators are a specific target audience of the research done at IHMC.

“And frankly,” Stone noted, “it’s just part of the moral obligation that we have to our service members to make sure that not only they leave in the best possible shape they can, but the years after they leave are as productive and high functioning as possible. That’s the moral obligation.”

Thanks to the Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance Research Complex, IHMC is uniquely positioned to fulfill this role.

IHMC is a not-for-profit research institute of the Florida University System where researchers pioneer science and technology aimed at leveraging and extending human capabilities. IHMC researchers and staff collaborate extensively with the government, industry and academia to help develop breakthrough technologies. IHMC research partners have included DARPA, the National Science Foundation, NASA, Army, Navy, Air Force, National Institutes of Health, IBM, Microsoft, Honda, Boeing, Lockheed and many others.

New Year, New Air Service! https://www.850businessmagazine.com/new-year-new-air-service/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 20:22:53 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=20994

On January 4, 2024, the City of Tallahassee welcomed JetBlue as the newest air service provider at Tallahassee International Airport (TLH). JetBlue will provide daily, nonstop service between TLH and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

As we enter the New Year, I am excited to welcome JetBlue to Floridas Capital City. This new service is the result of strategic investments in our airport and a focus on building strong business relationships to bring value to our community and further establish Tallahassee as a hub for economic activity,” Mayor John Dailey said.

“We are thrilled to introduce much-needed competition and relief to a route that has suffered from high fares for decades,” said Robert Land, head of government affairs and associate general counsel at JetBlue. “This new route further demonstrates our commitment to the Sunshine State and to providing low fares, great service and connectivity to customers in Fort Lauderdale, Tallahassee and beyond.”

JetBlue, known for its low fares and great service, features the most legroom in coach; fast, free and unlimited high-speed Fly-Fi; complimentary name-brand snacks and drinks; and seatback entertainment at every seat. The addition of JetBlues service expands travel options from Tallahassee to Fort Lauderdale utilizing the Airbus A320 aircraft, which has a capacity of up to 162 seats. JetBlue offers service to more than 100 destinations in the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada and Europe. Bookings are now available on JetBlue.com.

“With terminal renovations nearing completion and new air service options with JetBlue, we look forward to sharing TLHs fast, friendly and convenient travel experience with even more passengers in 2024,” David Pollard, City of Tallahassee Director of Aviation, said.

To mark the launch of JetBlues newest route, the community was invited to attend a celebration and reception on January 4, 2024, in the main airport terminal. Mayor John Dailey; City Manager Reese Goad; Robert Land, head of government affairs and associate general counsel at JetBlue; and Pollard all provided remarks during the reception.

Increasing Florida’s Interconnectivity

In Florida, JetBlue currently offers service in its focus cities of Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, as well as in Miami, West Palm Beach, Key West, Jacksonville, Fort Myers, Sarasota/Bradenton and Tampa. Within the state, JetBlue currently offers flights from Fort Lauderdale to Jacksonville. With Tallahassee service starting, JetBlue will now serve over 40 destinations from Fort Lauderdale.

“I am very pleased to see additional commercial options for Floridians to travel between South Florida and our state capital,” stated United States Representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. “I hope this is only the beginning of connecting all parts of our state to Florida’s critical seat of government and the rest of the region through the heart of South Florida here at FLL.”

“We celebrate JetBlue’s launch of nonstop jet service from Fort Lauderdale to Tallahassee as frequent fliers on this route have long desired more flight options for travel between these two Florida destinations,” said Mark Gale, FLL CEO/Director of Aviation. “This is a great way to start 2024, and we look forward to continued collaboration with JetBlue as it eyes additional growth at FLL for the future.”

Connecting South Florida to the State Capital

Cot 9493 Enhanced Nr
Convenient travel to Tallahassee is essential, given its critical role as the Florida state capital and as home to major universities; however, its distance from South Florida puts it just too far to easily drive. JetBlue’s daily service offers those traveling back and forth for business or education an affordable and comfortable option, while also creating opportunities for both leisure and business customers traveling from Tallahassee to connect in Fort Lauderdale to other JetBlue destinations.

“I am beyond elated that Broward residents have another option to travel to our state capital without having to start in another county or travel to another state before getting there,” stated Florida State Representative, Chip LaMarca. “Those of us who represent the people of Broward can now get to Tallahassee on JetBlue at a reasonable cost, without contemplating a seven-hour drive.”

Tallahassee International Airport, owned and operated by the City of Tallahassee, is committed to delivering an exceptional way to fly with a fast, friendly and convenient travel experience. Focused investments by the City have grown Tallahassee International Airport into one of the largest economic drivers in the North Florida region. With the addition of new air service and major infrastructure projects underway, including the International Processing Facility, TLH is on track to serve one million passengers in 2024.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate the beginning of JetBlue’s direct, daily service between Florida’s capital city and Fort Lauderdale. We look forward to extending a warm welcome to passengers who enjoy this new air service option at Tallahassee International Airport,” said City of Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey. “Intrastate travel is a driver for our economy, and our airport’s partnership with JetBlue provides a convenient connection to and from South Florida that will benefit residents and visitors alike.”

SunQuest Cruises Expands Business with Two New Ventures https://www.850businessmagazine.com/sunquest-cruises-expands-business-with-two-new-ventures/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 00:21:57 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=20249

November 21, 2023 – SunQuest Cruises is pleased to announce the expansion of their event, wedding, and catering services into two new businesses, SunQuest Catering along with Emerald Coast Florals and Event Design.

SunQuest Cruises was originally founded in 2004 by James (Shorty) Murray II and his late father, James Murray, with a custom-built 125-foot dining and entertainment yacht, fondly known as The Solaris, located at the docks of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

The company has specialized in creating unforgettable memories on the water for all occasions over the past two decades. While the yacht was specifically built to host weddings, The Solaris has hosted various events ranging from corporate meetings and birthday parties to charity dinners and fundraising galas. Their most notable clients include Coca Cola, Pepsi Co., SEC Football Coaches, Yamaha, and Navy SEAL operator, Robert O’Neil. The company expanded in 2010 with SunVenture Cruises when Murray purchased two 45’ Corinthian Catamarans offering a more intimate boating experience for bachelor or bachelorette parties, smaller celebrations, or rehearsal dinners. They also offer daily cruises of the Destin harbor, Crab Island, and dolphin cruises.

SunQuest Cruises has received numerous accolades throughout the years including recognitions from The Knot, regional magazines including Emerald Coast Magazine and VIP Destin Magazine and most notably being placed in the Top One Percent of Wedding Venues in the United States by Wedding Wire. Even through numerous hurricanes, oil spills, and pandemics, Murray has kept the business alive and thriving while keeping his clients and employees at the forefront.

9h2a2064 409

Since its inception, SunQuest Cruises has produced over 4,000 weddings. SunQuest Beach Weddings was created under the brand umbrella to offer brides full-serving planning with custom packages and a unique four step process that helps eliminate stress and uncertainty. Their team has a collection of 75 years’ experience in the event planning industry and guarantees a 24-hour response time to all clients and prospective customers.

“It can be overwhelming for brides who aren’t local or who are overwhelmed with the wedding process in general,” Murray said. “Our team of experts offers a step-by-step process to make sure deadlines are met, selections are made on time, and that all the important details are included. We even offer 3D models of the event space so brides can understand the layout and look of their big day.”

While keeping brides in mind, Murray also wants the business to benefit and be a resource to the numerous wedding and event planners throughout Bay, Escambia, Okaloosa, and Walton Counties. Emerald Coast Florals and Event Design as well as SunQuest Catering will be an extension of the business that will do just that.

“Planners normally have to reach out to numerous vendors for their brides or clients to handle rentals, florals, cakes, lighting, or food,” Murray said. “We are going to be their one-stop-shop to essentially take care of everything from start to finish.”

Emerald Coast Florals and Event Design will offer all event rentals ranging from tables, chairs, and linens, to stages, lighting, and sound equipment. They have an experienced team of floral designers to execute the client’s vision, big or small. Planners will be able to work with the event design team one-on-one to develop a concept and make sure all aspects of the event are met to the highest standard.

9h2a2500 577

“Our mantra ‘make it happen’ is very much a part of our company culture,” Murray said. “We are here to execute any request and offer a creative hand when producing any event.”

SunQuest Catering will offer a wide range of cuisine featuring local, fresh ingredients and dishes that are made from scratch. Clients can choose from a variety of service options including plated meals, buffet style, or stations for their event. The culinary menu also boasts fine dining dishes including caviar stuffed potatoes, filet mignon, and rack of lamb to more casual styles including gourmet cheeseburgers and lasagna. SunQuest Catering also offers in-home catering services and beach bonfire set ups across the Emerald Coast.

Salmon1

“Our Drop-and-Go option allows us to work with your property manager to drop off meals to your rental home before you even arrive,” Murray said. “We can cater from an intimate dinner party, game day, or girls’ night to a corporate gathering of 1,000 plus. It’s entirely customizable from start to finish.”

Planners and clients can contact SunQuest Cruises through any of these brands to coordinate and execute their next event. SunQuest Cruises is able to customize any of their offerings and offers a la carte options depending on the needs of the client.

“We want to bring these two businesses to the community to help planners and clients alike,” Murray said. “We understand what people go through when planning an event, and we want to make the process as easy and streamlined as possible.”

A New Camelot for Killearn https://www.850businessmagazine.com/a-new-camelot-for-killearn/ Tue, 13 Jun 2023 23:59:25 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=19166

Once upon a time, there was a white knight — a benefactor, generous and brave. Hear now how this hero rode up on his shiny new golf cart and saved a (s)puttering realm!

It sounds like fantasy, but what has happened over the last year at the venerable Killearn Golf Course and Country Club in upscale Northeast Tallahassee, isn’t a fairy tale — even though the arrival of David Cummings, once a “child of Killearn” and now a highly successful Atlanta-based IT entrepreneur, has left golf lovers and homeowners along the course feeling like they are living a dream.

Early planned community

In 1964, work on Killearn Estates, Tallahassee’s first planned community, began. Formerly a farm, the area called Velda Dairy consisted of 3,800 acres. Plans called for subdivisions, the most exclusive of which would include a championship 18-hole golf course, which was completed in 1969 by developer J.T. Williams.

With its majestic oaks, contoured fairways and greens, an inn, clubhouse, tennis courts, pool and fine restaurant, the 1,000-member Killearn Club was the gemstone of the area. By the 1970s, the 200-acre course was hosting the Tallahassee Open, a PGA Tour event.

In 1987, the now 27-hole golf course was purchased by Barton Tuck who both ran it and leased it out for nearly 30 years. By 2014, Tuck proposed closing nine holes and selling property to raise the $4 million to $5 million needed for repairs and modernization. If members vetoed the plan, he threatened to sell the entire course to developers by 2021, when protective covenants expired, and replace it all with single-family homes. Membership had dropped to 300.

What followed were years of lawsuits filed by Killearn Country Club members and the homeowner’s association against Tuck in opposition to his plans to redevelop some of the course. Investor J.T. Burnette had pledged $2.5 million toward a home-building venture.

With Tuck’s $2.8 million golf course mortgage running in arrears, he was looking for an angel. Two of them seemed to show up in the persons of Jimmy Graganella and Ron Tolliver, both wealthy entrepreneurs and insurance executives.

They made a $2 million offer, assumed Tuck’s mortgage, and proposed raising additional money to buy the country club and course through friends and believers in its long-term value. In the end, however, accruing enough money to propel and rehab the Killearn Country Club and Golf Course didn’t prove feasible.

And then along came the white knight.

Enter David Cummings

David Cummings

By any measure, 43-year-old Cummings is a wunderkind. He is the founder of 10 companies employing thousands of people, including Atlanta Tech Village, the fourth largest tech hub in the U.S. He holds an economics degree from Duke University and an honorary doctorate from Mercer University.

Cummings grew up at Killearn Estates, attended Lincoln High School, played golf on the Killearn course and had a golf-course wedding reception there.

“My attachment to the Killearn Golf Course and Country Club is deeply sentimental,” he said. “I lived on Monaghan Drive as a kid, and my 98-year-old grandfather lives on the course to this day. It is my desire to revitalize this historic place and bring it back to the beauty and vitality it once had.”

In 2020, Cummings placed millions of dollars in escrow and personally committed to buy the club and course for $2.6 million and invest $20 million in a complete recreation of the Killearn landmark. By the way, there will be no new single-family homes appearing on the property.

Work commences

Beginning in September 2022, residents along the expansive course began to see the earth shift — literally. Premier golf course architect Chris Wilczynski of C.W. Golf Architecture has totally redesigned fairways, bunkers and greens. MacCurrach Golf Construction, the other half of a design/build collaboration, has unleashed a fleet of heavy equipment on the 56-year-old course, turning the land into rounded swells and sculpted fairways sprinkled with pretty water hazards and newly devilish sand traps.

The project includes drainage structures that will guard against the erosion of greens. Filters and liners will be placed beneath the sand in bunkers. The work also will include a new irrigation system for the entire course; 10 water hazards with an expanded pond; six sets of tees for each hole; TifEagle Bermuda grass on greens; TifTuft Bermuda grass on fairways and in the first cuts of rough; and Bahiagrass in the outer unmaintained rough.

Rendering

Cummings explained that he wants the new course to reflect both traditional and emerging aspects of golf. He talked about “gamifying” the experience.

To that end, plans include an executive nine-hole course that can be played in 90 minutes and a 20,000-square-foot putting and chipping practice area. A 10-acre driving range will feature cutting-edge Trackman technology.

DAG Architects’ Jehna Godwin is the principal architect for the new clubhouse, restaurant and layout of the pool, tennis and pickleball courts.

“There will be wonderful views from inside to all the activities outside, especially the finishes at the 18th hole,” she said.

Cummings, who says the Killearn redevelopment project is his “gift” to the community, visits the course to check on progress every week or two.

“I am pumped!” said Bill Davis, who lives on what will be the new finishing hole. “We are just so grateful David Cummings has come along!”

A Happy, Happy Day https://www.850businessmagazine.com/a-happy-happy-day/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 21:16:37 +0000 https://www.850businessmagazine.com/?p=18758

One more than half expected the Port St. Joe Sharks cheerleaders to show up at any moment. Harold Hill the Music Man or an equivalent along with a troupe of youthful horn blowers would not have been out of place.

Here was a celebration reflective of the small bayside community in which it took place.  Folks began to show up a half hour or more before the event’s announced start time. Women wore white jeans and gold sandals, men favored guayabera shirts and Bermuda length shorts — semiformal attire for folks around here.

They gathered for a Friday afternoon grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly opened Point South Marina in Port St. Joe,  a city, like others along the northern Gulf Coast, that was beleaguered by the Michael/COVID-19 double whammy.

Folks inspected several mighty fine boats on display, some commenting that they could scarcely afford to gas up the largest of them, and watched as a boat body mounted on a truck chassis moved about the grounds. The novel vehicle is to the Freedom Boat Club as the Weinermobile is to Oscar Mayer.

“We are thrilled to have this marina here where we can enjoy St. Joe Bay together,” said the facility’s general manager Preston Sutter as the proceedings began, then yielded the microphone to Port St. Joe Mayor Rex Buzzett, who commented, “It is a great day to open this marina that was a long time coming on the rebuild.”

Buzzett offered onlookers a history lesson, recalling that the property where today’s marina is located was a Hess Oil terminal in the 1960s. The terminal was abandoned as port business started to decline and was acquired by the City of  Port St. Joe. Subsequently, the St. Joe Company purchased from the city a portion of the old Hess property.

In the mid-1990s, the mayor said, the St. Joe Company submitted a proposed order providing for marina development to the city, and commissioners approved it with a 3-2 vote.

“What a catalyst to this area it was,” Buzzett said.

Then, in 2018, Michael wiped it out.

“The St. Joe Company doubled down and said we’re gonna rebuild it,” a grateful Buzzett continued. “The city got a grant to replace sewer and water lines downtown. The first part of that project was to extend lines to this (marina) area, which is going to be an economic engine for years to come.”

Buzzett introduced U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn (R-Panama City), who had recently toured Port St. Joe, the mayor said, to assess its storm recovery progress. Dunn approached the microphone on three legs, having recently had a hip replaced.

The marina, Dunn said, “shows you that people with a vision who work persistently and hard can build this kind of future for a city. I have never seen downtown Port St. Joe look any better than it looks today, and we all remember how bad it looked after the storm; it was devastation.”

Dunn was effusive in his praise for the people of Port St. Joe and Gulf County and their elected officials.

“No matter how strong a Category 5 hurricane is, the people of the Panhandle are stronger,” Dunn said. “This is a happy, happy day.”

Point South Marina Port St. Joe is a full-service marina and boat storage facility with 252 dry slips for boats up to 45 feet in length; 48 wet slips; a fuel dock; Outfitter Store; and a 300-foot transient dock. The St. Joe Company owns and operates the marina.

Rates for barn storage start at $17.50 per foot per month with a 25-foot minimum. For more information or to reserve space at the marina, people may visit PointSouthMarina.com; send an email to info.portstjoe@pointsouthmarina.com or call 850.227.3030.
